The countdown is on for the Nieuw Statendam maiden voyage. Holland America Line’s brand new cruise ship sets sail in just 3 weeks from Civitavecchia, Rome to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where Oprah Winfrey will officially name it.
The launch of a new ship is always an exciting time and this is especially so for Holland America. Nieuw Statendam is the second in their acclaimed Pinnacle-class of cruise ships – the first was Koningsdam – and the interiors have been created by the world-famous designer Adam D. Tihany.
The 99,500-ton Nieuw Statendam will have familiar elements that reflect the line’s heritage and classic style as well as state-of-the-art enhancements. Holland America tell us Nieuw Statendam will create the ultimate Pinnacle-class experience, right down to the mouthwatering meals. In fact, during a typical 7-day voyage on Nieuw Statendam over 370kg / 820lb of lobster will be devoured and 90kg / 200lb of fresh pasta will be relished!
They also promise guests will have more specialty restaurants to savour – including Sel de Mer, The Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind and the Grand Dutch Cafe. There will also be America’s Test Kitchen’s for cooking classes and hands-on workshops. Plus, Nieuw Statendam will feature BBC Earth Experiences in the spectacular two-story World Stage theatre.
Nieuw Statendam will have room for 2,666 guests. There will be inside, ocean view and veranda rooms and suites. In fact the cruise ship can be thought of as having two classes, with guests in the Neptune and Pinnacle Suites cruising in First. They get extra perks like access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge, plus a private concierge and an array of complimentary services.
Holland America are renowned for their support of the arts, and Nieuw Statendam will be a sparkling showcase featuring the work of over 150 artists, like acclaimed Australian still-life photographer Kevin Best.
The naming ceremony for Nieuw Statendam will be a private affair, perhaps because Oprah Winfrey is the ship’s godmother! It will take place on 2 February 2019 in Fort Lauderdale after a special 3-day ‘Girl’s Getaway’ cruise hosted by Ms. Winfrey. Interestingly, Holland America Line’s first ship to be named Statendam sailed in 1898. Nieuw Statendam will be the sixth ship in the company’s history to carry the name.
The Nieuw Statendam maiden voyage departs Rome on 05 December 2018 for the 14-day crossing to Fort Lauderdale.
