The Ponant Explorations Group has taken a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions, the award-winning ultra-small ship expedition company.
“We are thrilled to welcome Aqua Expeditions into the Ponant family. [The partnership] reflects our commitment to offering unparalleled travel experiences in iconic destinations.”
Hervé Gastinel, CEO Ponant Explorations Group.
Brands united
Ponant is the global leader in luxury expedition cruising, with a fleet of 14 eco-friendly ships that sail all over the world. On the other hand, Aqua Expeditions occupy a niche market with a fleet of 5 intimate, high-end vessels like Aqua Mekong. These unqiue expedition ships sail the Amazon and Mekong Rivers, and the Indonesian and Galapagos Islands.
Benefits for Ponant and Aqua Expeditions
The strategic partnership between the two family owned businesses looks to be of benefit to both. It aligns with Ponant’s vision for excellence and sustainability, while giving Aqua Expeditions access the capital required to expand.
“With the financial support and expertise from our partners, we are well-positioned to continue our growth and offer our guests unforgettable journeys to the world’s most biodiverse and culturally rich regions.”
Francesco Galli Zugaro, CEO of Aqua Expeditions.
Indeed, Aqua Expeditions tell us the transaction comes at a pivotal time with the first of its new East Africa itineraries sailing in December 2025.
Aqua Expeditions brand unchanged
It’s worth noting that Francesco Galli Zugaro, the CEO and Founder of Aqua Expeditions, will continue to lead the company which will operate as a stand-alone business. Also, it will retain the brand name “Aqua Expeditions”.
Ponant’s acquisition of a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions follows its purchase of Tahitian-based Paul Gauguin Cruises in 2019.
