The Verandah Stateroom is the most popular type of accommodation on Nieuw Statendam. Each one has a Nordic feel with sharp lines and clever design features. In addition, there is a spacious verandah.
The decor in the Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom looks smart. There is a palette of charcoal grey and creams, offset with beechwood timber and splashes of vibrant orange.
I think the Verandah Stateroom is a great premium offering. It is a comfortable sanctuary – a lovely place to relax – especially on busy sea days.

Verandah Stateroom floor plan
The Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom is modest in size, measuring just 21.2 sq. m. / 228 sq. ft. including the verandah. However, some of these staterooms have extra deep balconies which are 16.4 sq. m. / 177 sq. ft. larger. It’s important to note that the inside space remains the same.
The Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom floor plan is typical for a premium cruise ship. There is a bedroom with a small sitting area and writing desk. There is a closet in the hall and a well proportioned bathroom. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead on to the balcony.
Well designed living space
The living space of the Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom has a sharp design. In fact it is distinctly Dutch-modern. There are beechwood cabinets and fixtures and a charcoal toned carpet. Vibrant splashes of orange create visual highlights and there is artwork on the wall. It’s all very smart.
The living space has a combined sleeping and sitting area. The signature Mariner’s Dream bedding can be configured as a queen or twin-bed setup, the choice is yours. Either way you are assured of a good nights sleep with a plush Euro-Top mattress.
In addition there is a soft leather headboard, while on either side there are night stands with extra storage spaces. There are also bedside power units with USB slots for charging your mobile devices, as well as night lamps and multidirectional reading lights.
The sitting area has a small writing desk and sofa. There is also a little coffee table, however I found this tended to get in the way when moving around the small space.
Modern cruisers will appreciate the cleverly designed writing desk. It has three U.S. and two European power outlets, as well as a handy USB slot.
There is also a large wall-mounted television. It is fully interactive, enabling you to select movies on-demand, view your itinerary or see your shipboard account. Under the television there is a clever built-in magazine rack.
The living space also has a small bar area with room for glassware and bottles, as well as a fruit basket.
A delightful verandah
I think the glass-fronted verandah is the best part of the Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom. It’s large, in fact it is as large as those found on many luxury cruise ships.
There is plenty of room for the outdoor furniture which includes two reclining armchairs with ottomans and a cocktail table. The verandah is the perfect retreat – a private hideaway where you can watch the ocean drift by while you read a good book.
A spacious, modern bathroom
The bathroom in the Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom is a real surprise. Mostly because of its size, but also because of its bright and modern design.
I especially liked the large, walk-in shower. It has a glass door that closes tightly, so there are never any leaks. There is a relatively large basin as well as a stone vanity with plenty of space for toiletries. In addition there is a set of glass shelves for storing personal items and extra storage space under the vanity.
Storage space
The Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom has ample storage space for its size. There is a closet with hanging space for two large cases full of clothing. In addition there is adjustable shelving and a set of drawers.
Plus, there are two particularly useful drawers under the foot of the bed too. These are great for storing bulky, cold weather clothing or items you might use less often.
It’s also worth noting that there is plenty of room to store even the largest hard shell luggage cases under the bed as well.
Nieuw Statendam Stateroom positions
There are 851 Verandah Staterooms onboard Nieuw Statendam. They are spread across the entire length of the cruise ship from decks 4 to 11.
There are a range of Verandah Stateroom categories including V, VA, VB, VC, VD, VE, VF, VH, VS. It Is important to note that the internal space of each of these stateroom categories is the same, only the size of the verandah, the view and/or the stateroom positions vary.
VH category: These staterooms may have obstructed views due to the placement of lifeboats in front of the verandahs.
VS category: These staterooms are aft-facing with wake views.
VB and VF categories: These staterooms on deck 4 have larger verandahs.
V, VA and VH categories: These staterooms have a preferred midship location. If you are prone to seasickness I recommend selecting a stateroom in these categories.
Club Orange add-on
Club Orange is Holland America Line’s premium service offering. It is available to guests in the top suites, but guests in Verandah Staterooms may also enjoy the benefits with a Club Orange add-on.
The Club Orange add-on gives guests access to the exclusive Club Orange restaurant, as well as other perks like welcome champagne, priority boarding, priority specialty restaurant reservations, upgraded room amenities and a dedicated Club Orange Guest Services desk. Read our “What is Club Orange” story for more details.
Any Nieuw Statendam Verandah Stateroom booking can have Club Orange added for USD35 per person, per day. All guests in each stateroom must purchase the Club Orange add-on. However, it should be noted that the availability of Club Orange for non-suite guests is limited.

The author sailed as a guest of Holland America Line.
Hello, I am about to cruise on Nieuw Statendam this summer, I’d like to know if the laundry and pressing package are charged by the stateroom or individuals. We travel as a couple. Thanks.
Dear Hung
Thank you for your question. In my experience the package is charged per stateroom.

Is there an iron in our VE stateroom on Nieuw Statendam?
Dear William,
There are no irons in any of the staterooms. For that matter, there are no irons permitted in any cruise ship staterooms or suites as they pose a fire risk.
However, Holland America Line do have laundry and pressing packages available for purchase. It’s worth noting there are no self-service laundries on Nieuw Statendam.
I hope this helps in your travel planning.
Kind regards

Is there a hair dryer in the bathroom and a plug in for hair straightener?
Dear Kelly
When I last sailed on Nieuw Statendam they did have hair driers. Plugs for electrical appliances are both US and EURO.

Are there refrigerators in all verandah staterooms? Also, I noticed that water is permitted to be brought aboard the ship in limited quantities. Do you know if this includes sparkling (carbonated) water such as Pelligrino or Perrier?
